Randy Smith Award for Humorous Poetry

Watch this space! After taking a semester off to catch its breath and practice social distancing, the Humorous Poetry Contest looks to make its triumphant return in Spring 2022.

Sponsored by Betty Hufford and given out annually by the creative writing program at Glendale Community College, this award honors Randy Smith. His closest friends and loved ones describe him as “a font of creativity. He was a premier cardboard boat builder on Tempe Town Lake. He could fabricate a Roman centurion’s costume from a sheet, a brush, and a garbage can lid. Finally, he composed and presented poems like a bard. The Randy Smith Award commemorates his never-failing good humor.”

Given out during the Spring semester, the award calls on students to perform their finest and funniest poem during a celebratory reading in March. Each participant is afforded three minutes to perform their work, and they must be a registered GCC student to compete. Stay tuned to gccazcrw.com for information about upcoming contests, and direct questions about the process to jeffrey.baker@gccaz.edu

The Humorous Poetry Contest for Spring 2020 will take place on March 18th, from 6PM to 8PM in SU-104 on GCC’s Main Campus.
