Open Mic: Featuring Traveler Winners

Wednesday. The middle child of the weekday family. The forgotten one. Pessimistic and cynical. Overlooked, but for good reason. Wednesday is to blame for everything, after all. No new bike for you, Wednesday. No new clothes either. Monday’s will fit you. Monday, who came first. Monday, who blazed the trail, set the tone, went boldly into a world filled with fresh experiences and innumerable possibilities. And then there’s Friday–the baby, the one Aunt Saturday and Uncle Sunday give the extra toys and attention to, the one everyone still thinks is cute and fun and worth their time.

Well, we here at GCC think you’re adorable, Wednesdays. So adorable, in fact, we’ve chosen to hold all of our open mics right there, atop your wee forehead. And our next open mic is special: We’re featuring writers published in our most recent issue of the Traveler magazine.

So, come out to GCC,  share your work, and then listen to the fantastic pieces published in the Traveler.

  • When: Wednesday, October 19th from 7:00PM to 9:30PM.
  • Where: GCC Main Campus, SU104.
  • Why: Because Wednesday’s feelings will be hurt if you don’t come.

Open Mic: Featuring Shawnte Orion

Interested in transforming waves of sound into variations of electrical energy? I know: Who isn’t? Thankfully, GCC has us covered. Soon, GCC will be hosting an event involving microphones. These microphones will be of the open variety (we tried the closed variety, but testing proved unfavorable). Bring your poems, your short fiction, your short nonfiction, your creativity (short is optional here) and share any or all of it with an audience of listeners eager to experience the transformation of sound waves into electrical energy.

In addition to the Open Mic, we will also have Shawnte Orion as the featured reader. The longtime MC of these readings, Shawnte returns to share much of his own work. So, come read, come listen, and come support creative writing in the community.

  • When: Wednesday, September 21st from 7:00 to 9:30PM.
  • Where: GCC Main Campus, SU104.
  • Why: Because it will make your neighbors jealous.

First, on April 20th, GCC will host the final open mic of the Spring semester. The even will begin at 7PM outside the east entrance of GCC Main’s Student Union. Emerging Writers 2016

The second reading is hosted by our friends at Scottsdale Community College on Thursday, April 21st. This, too, is a special reading. Each college across the district will have two representatives, nominated by faculty, who will read their work. This year, GCC’s own Jamie Heath and Taylor Robinson will regale the audience with their work. The reading is open to the public at Scottsdale Community College, Two Waters Circle, at 7PM. Come, support your fellow Gauchos, and listen to a wonderful night of readings.

The event is free, open to the public, but not recommended for children. So, bring what you’ve been working on and regale everyone with your talent. Hosted by Shawnte Orion, the open mic portion of the evening will begin at 7PM, and the night will conclude with a reading from featured guest, Joel Salcido.

Born a Los Angeles cockroach and smuggled to the Westside of Phoenix, Joel Salcido translates the poetry of the barrio pigeons into surrealist prophecies. He is blessed with a beautiful wife and two sons as well as a cadre of talentedly mad brothers, friends, coconspirators and fellow hood radicals. He writes poetry and prose and is working towards a mastery of arts while building a boat out of editor’s rejection letters to float back to the moon. Joel is an MFA candidate in poetry at Arizona State University.
